They had the Fat Boy and Street Bob, combine both and here comes the Fat Bob. With the looks of the former and the same Dyna frame as the latter, Harley-Davidson's Fat Bob features a dual-shock rear suspension and a Twin Cam 96 engine with rocker arms and wet-sump lubricating system.
The machine that will inevitably appeal to long-time fans of the genre, with the dual headlights, fat tyres, chrome bits and the sleek Bobtail fender. The Fat Bob turns heads with its dark treatment, a beefy tank and the machined aluminum wheels. The matte black-painted engine with polished cooling fins is technically advanced for an air-cooled, large-displacement twin.
Driven by a 75 horsepower 1,584cc V-twin that produces 92 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm, the Fat Bob uses a single air filter and 'Tommy Gun' 2-1-2 exhaust. The closed-loop electronic sequential port fuel injection (ESPFI) system improves combustion, making accelerations and decelerations more progressive. The ignition and injection systems work together to limit fuel consumption and eliminate clatter noises. Drive-by-wire throttle allows the rider to manage output more easily and effectively. All this power is delivered through the 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission is ideally calibrated to make the most of the generous torque and reduce the frequency of gear shifts.
Dyna models ride on a steel tube frame with a thick, rectangular backbone that provides decent rigidity. Harley used steel for everything: the mounts, fenders and side cladding. The rest of the Fat Bob's chassis is pretty classic, notwithstanding the size of the tyres and dual-disc front brakes.
The instrument panel has a pretty basic look with a speedometer and small digital display for the odometer and dual trip metres, but also sports the range and side stand indicators. There's also a 6-speed indicator light.
All in all, the Harley-Davidson Fat Bob has a commanding size and character. Comfortably seated, the rider can negotiate one corner after another with solid twists of the throttle, all the while enjoying the lovely sound of the Twin Cam engine. The Fat Bob might be a bruiser that requires extra effort to handle appropriately, but this steed from Milwaukee really captures the wild, timeless spirit born in the sixties.
